Al Khushaybi batteries in Qassim: ENGIE's largest energy storage project worldwide, with 500 MW and 2,000 MWh

The Al Khushaybi Battery Energy Storage System in the Qassim Region is a 500 MW / 2,000 MWh standalone project developed by ENGIE with Haji Abdullah Alireza & Co. under a storage service agreement with the Saudi Power Procurement Company (Principal Buyer). POWERCHINA announced on 13 October 2026 that its SEPCO unit won the engineering, procurement and construction contract.

WHY IT MATTERS

Let me explain

The plant can deliver up to four hours of continuous output at full capacity, enough to cover the peak-period electricity needs of around 100,000 Saudi households, and represents foreign direct investment of approximately USD 220 million. It is ENGIE's largest battery storage project worldwide to date and will use modular, containerised lithium iron phosphate batteries with integrated fire protection, monitored around the clock over a 15-year operational life. It is built under a build-own-operate model supervised by the Ministry of Energy, on 0.5 square kilometres inside the Khushaybi solar park. Al Khushaybi is one of four projects in the Kingdom's first group of battery storage projects, with a combined 2,000 MW for four hours and investment above SAR 4.35 billion, supporting a generation mix of around 50% renewables by 2030 (ENGIE; Principal Buyer via SPA, 20 August 2026; POWERCHINA via TradeArabia, 14 October 2026).
