Architecture series, episode 8: KAPSARC, Riyadh

The King Abdullah Petroleum Studies and Research Center (KAPSARC) is a non-profit energy policy research institution whose Riyadh campus was designed by Zaha Hadid Architects between 2009 and 2017, organised as a honeycomb of hexagonal cells.

WHY IT MATTERS

Let me explain

The honeycomb is the structure that makes a lattice of cells with the least material. The grid compresses toward its central axis as an extension of the wadi to the west, and the campus can grow by adding new cells. Across 70,000 square metres it holds five buildings: the Energy Knowledge Centre, the Energy Computer Centre, a Conference Centre with an exhibition hall and a 300 seat auditorium, a Research Library with archives for 100,000 volumes, and the Musalla. The buildings turn a solid back to the southern sun and open to the north and west, where northern winds cool the shaded central courtyard and roof wind catchers cool the inner courtyards. It is Zaha Hadid Architects' first LEED Platinum project, with a 45% energy reduction against the ASHRAE baseline (Zaha Hadid Architects).
