Architecture series, episode 10: King Fahad National Library, Riyadh

One of the Kingdom's most important cultural buildings. The German practice Gerber Architekten won first prize in the 2002 design competition, and construction ran from 2008 to 2015. The old library was not demolished: the new building wraps around it.

WHY IT MATTERS

Let me explain

The old building's wide roof became a light-filled reading landscape, the book stacks are kept inside it, and visitors reach the open-access sections by bridges from the reading area. The custom facade uses white rhomboid textile awnings carried by a three-dimensional tensioned steel cable structure; they shade the building and reinterpret the Arabian tent tradition in a modern, technical way, and at night the facade glows with a soft white light. Gross floor area 86,632 square metres, gross volume 452,000 cubic metres (Gerber Architekten).
