Architecture series, episode 13: Sharaan Resort in AlUla by Jean Nouvel

A resort being carved into a 500-million-year-old mountain in AlUla's Sharaan Nature Reserve, designed by Jean Nouvel for the Royal Commission for AlUla, with 38 suites, a fine-dining restaurant atop the mountain and a glass elevator through ancient sedimentary layers. It is under construction.

WHY IT MATTERS

Let me explain

Just as the Nabataeans carved structures into nearby sandstone more than 2,000 years ago, the resort is built directly into the mountains. It includes 38 suites, a spa and wellness center, kids club, sport centre, all-day dining restaurant and business centre. The Sharaan International Summit Centre sits inside an adjacent mountain (auditorium, meeting rooms, majlis, library, sport and leisure area), with 13 hospitality pavilions and two private villas nearby, for 53 hospitality keys in total. Passive design and natural geological heat transfer cool it in summer and warm it in winter, and it aims for zero wastewater. RCU signed with Bouygues Construction in June 2023 (joint venture with Almabani; consultant WSP; program management Jasara), and the first rock excavation began in March 2024 (RCU releases via PR Newswire and Zawya; jeannouvel.com).
